Futures and Options on Bhimax: Leverage, Liquidity and Hedging

Two derivative markets, two different risk profiles. Here is what each one is good at.

What futures trading offers

One of the primary advantages of futures trading is leverage. Traders can control a large position with a relatively small amount of capital, magnifying both potential gains and losses. This leverage can be a powerful tool in a trader's arsenal but requires careful risk management.

Additionally, futures trading provides liquidity and flexibility, enabling traders to enter and exit positions quickly. Futures markets are typically highly liquid, meaning there are always buyers and sellers available.

What options trading offers

  • Leverage: Options allow traders to control a large position with a relatively small amount of capital (the premium). This leverage can magnify potential profits.
  • Risk Management: Options can act as a hedge against adverse price movements.
  • Flexibility: Traders can employ various strategies, such as covered calls, straddles, or spreads, to capitalize on specific market conditions.
  • Limited Risk for Buyers: Buyers of options can only lose the premium paid for the option, unlike futures contracts, where losses can be unlimited.
  • Profit from Volatility: Options traders can benefit from both rising and falling markets, as well as from periods of high volatility.

Choosing between them

The key structural difference is downside. With options, a buyer's loss is capped at the premium paid. With futures, losses are not capped in the same way, which is why position sizing and stop-losses carry more weight.
